Pictures and Sidenotes

Which is cuter, 1 or...

2?

Daddy forcing him to play on his bike

When there aren't toys to grab and suck on, he grabs his clothes and blankets and sucks his lip

Tell me how he likes this and doesn't like eating cereal?

Our afternoon tradition, NAP TIME! Forgive my fatness

We knew he woke up for a little while during the night, but we didn't think he could move this much so quick

He does this cute thing where he is realizing he has two hands!

Being Little

So we took Michael to the doctor on Tuesday and were told we could start Michael on rice cereal.  Which we decided to try.  When we got home the first thing we did was make him a small bowl with formula, which he decided to spit right out, eat his bib, and be absolutely angry about.
Before the first spoonful

Force-fed

"Why are you doing this to me??"

Unhappy camper

The only person enjoying this

Wednesday we tried again, but with breast milk, and we made it a little creamier.  He hated this worse.  I made less than an ounce, and I doubt he got any down.  To make matters worse, he got shots.  So for some reason he's decided to wake up at 4am and refuse to sleep.  All day and night.  So today I didn't feed him.  Guess who's already in bed?  I know I should stick with it, but he's a little guy, and maybe his tongue isn't quite ready.  But that's okay, he can stay little as long as he wants!

Doctor's Appointment!

So Michael went in for his 4 month appointment today.  Here are his stats!

Height: 25" (38th percentile)
Weight: 13.2 lbs (9th percentile)
Head: 42 cm (31st percentile)

All I can say is he's so little!!

He has gained less than 3 lbs in 3 months, and less than 1lb in that last 2 months.  He's also grown 6 1/2" since birth!  In some ways I'm amazed at how big he's gotten, in others all I can think about is how small he is!

Enough with the opinions

This is my frustration post, you really don't have to read it.

So lately I've noticed, and been subjected to, this horrible trend where women (and men actually) criticize other women about everything to do with having a baby.  Honestly, I ask who I ask for advice (usually my sister because she's raising 3 amazing girls) and don't want any more, or any bad looks when I say how I raise Michael.

To all you criticizers:

Do I breastfeed? Yes

Do I like it? No. I hate it.  I want to quit breastfeeding, I've wanted to since Michael was 3 weeks old when I realized his NICU stay had damaging effects.  He just doesn't get it, which is understandable when he was given a bottle because of his blood sugar.  I would wean but I can't.  He did well on formula at first but when he turned 2 1/2 months he started rejecting it, he wouldn't sleep if he had it, and he spits it up like crazy.

I had an epidural.  I wanted to try going natural to try it, but I didn't care when I didn't get there.

Do we lose sleep?  Only if we choose to.  Michael decides when he sleeps through the night.  He has spurts where he will.  We have the opportunity to get sleep, but we don't always take advantage of it.

Do we feel guilty being on WIC?  No, so shove it!  Most college students and single moms are (everyone I know up here with a baby is).  We got it when Michael was still taking some formula at the beginning of the semester.  But I enjoy getting decent food without freaking out that I spent more than $20 on groceries so we kept it.

Does Michael watch TV?  Yes, about a half hour to an hour a day.  Usually half of that is baby einstein or sesame street.  Do I feel guilty, NO!  First, I need to eat sometimes, and this is the only way I get to eat breakfast and lunch.  Second, he enjoys it!  He loves it, sometimes it's more visual stimulation than a walk or toys give him.  Third, am I scared that it will cause ADD or ADHD?  No.  When Michael is a little older and can play with more toys he won't watch TV nearly as much.  For the time being he doesn't understand what most of his toys do.

Have I lost the pregnancy weight?  NOOOO! I still have 15 lbs to go and Michael is 4 1/2 months.  Do I feel fat, everyday.  Do I work out, not often.  It's a little difficult when Josh gets home at 9 and we eat dinner.  I could do more, but honestly I'd rather do some homework/let Josh study.

Why isn't Michael wearing hats when I take him for walks?  His head's too big for newborn and too little for his summer hat.  Don't worry, I slather him with sunscreen, I know he got my husbands ultra white skin!

When are we having another baby?  When we are either prompted, or think we should.  Could this mean we get pregnant sometime in the next year....probably.  Does this mean I'm pregnant now, no.

Do I understand everything you went through during labor?  No.  I didn't have a difficult labor, in fact it was rather peachy, remember I got an epidural.  I also had a small baby, which wasn't so great when he had blood sugar issues.  But, I had a crazy pregnancy.  Doctors told me to do the opposite of each other, which is awesome when you see 5 doctors throughout your pregnancy.  So no, I don't understand crazy deliveries, but you might not understand being completely stressed out when no one has, or is willing to give you, a straight answer.

The worst one ever, do I regret having Michael?  No.  Never.  So excuse me when I get upset when I hear things about how I shouldn't have had him so young or when we were in school.  I never realized how much I needed this boy until he came.  Josh and I are extremely happy to have him and would never give it up.  No if's, and's, or but's.

Unfortunately the people that have made me angry enough to post this probably won't ever see it.  I just needed to get out weeks worth of built up frustration.

That time of the month again...

No not that!  It's Michael's growth spurt, or so I think, maybe it's teething.

Whatever it is, Michael goes through spells every few weeks where he is inconsolable.  Sometimes it's been a growth spurt, other times I've forgotten his medicine and his throat hurt him.  I haven't weighed him in a week but he doesn't look any bigger, but then again I'm feeding him every couple hours.  I'll find out how much he weighs next Tuesday, given his doctor's office didn't schedule us when he's out of town again.

On a very positive note, I can tell I'm finally recovering from having a baby because we aren't both in tears, just him.

Frenemies

So there really is a love hate relationship with Carter's....I love it, Josh hates that I love it, but secretly he loves it too!

We knew Michael needed some more 6-9 month clothes, especially since I plan on taking him camping for a week, and he goes through 2+ outfits a day.  So I walked into the Carter's store.  Lo and behold there was a sale!  A BIG sale!  Everything I got was at least 25% off, some things were 50%.
Most of it was from the new collection too!  I'm so excited to dress him up in his church outfit, his one cold day outfit, all of the onesies and overalls, the red onesie that says "crabby" to go with the crab pants, and his swimsuit!

With matching hat and sunglasses!

I'm going to pray for another sale soon because Michael is really lacking in 9-12 month clothes too!  My hope is that he fits into these clothes all summer and fall.  They are only for 16.5-20.5 lbs, but he is currently 13ish pounds and has been for the last month.  CROSSING MY FINGERS he stays little

Michael Pictures

Unfortunately Michael doesn't like the camera, he knows not to smile whenever I point it at him :( but these pics are still cute!

He loves grabbing these round little toys, but he starts shaking his fists around and they become bracelets

He just realized it was stuck on his wrist

When there's nothing else to suck on, he pulls the boppy close and sucks on it

This is Peter, Michael's favorite toy, I know it's his favorite because he sucks on it all the time

I was cleaning Michael's room and had just put his toys away, so I handed him some of the spoons that I just bought and he loves them more than most of his toys!

I don't have a picture of it, but he is pretty good at getting the spoon in his mouth

New Job

This is my husband!
I never posted about this because most people already knew, but Josh got a promotion!  He's been with the company for a little over a year.  He started out in customer service and was hired right away because he could speak Spanish and could work nights.  Originally he was working 20 hours a week from 4-8 every night.  He ended up bumping up his hours to 30 when I got pregnant.  Right before I had Michael Josh needed a change.  He was done getting yelled at all day long by the same people every month.  He was also sick of the stagnant pay and lack of advancement.  He switched to a data processing job.  It had it's pros (chance for advancement, no yelling) and cons (working 3-9, working Saturday's) but he's been so much happier!  Then he got a promotion and things are a lot better! He's in charge of roughly 10 people now.  There is a pay raise...but we don't know what it is yet, we're waiting for his next check!

Something else his company offers is incentives on flights, hotels, rental cars, etc.  We've been trying to decide what we want to do with those.  Any ideas??

4 months already??

Maybe Spring Break is to blame, or spending time with our family and forgetting what day it is, but Michael turned 4 months yesterday!  I didn 't realize it until we went grocery shopping today.  But Michael had a fun celebration!  We went to the zoo with my sister Melissa and her adorable little girls!  There aren't any pictures because our camera died :P but it was fun.  I love my little neices so much.  After the zoo we went to lunch with Josh's brother.  Than we went shopping and loaded up on 6-9 month clothes, he's still way to little for them but we wanted to find a bathing suit for summer.  After that Michael was babysat by Grandma and Grandpa Tuttle while Josh and I went to a movie.  I think he enjoyed being babysat and spoiled just as much as we enjoyed a date night!  Time just keeps flying by!

Here are Michaels fun facts:

  • Michael rolled over for the first time
  • He is talking all the time, mostly vowel sounds, but every once in a while there is a "ga" or "ba" sound in there
  • He no longer sleeps in the carseat unless it coincides with his naps.  Even during the two hour drive to Salt Lake
  • He has officially met everyone in his immediate family (I'm counting all aunt's, uncle's, grandparents)
  • He is ready for a high chair, but we still haven't bought one yet because he isn't on solids
  • On that note, he goes in to the doctor in two weeks and we will find out if we can start him on solids, but, we might wait until he is 5 1/2 months to start them
  • He has started grabbing at everything, his clothes, his toys, his bibs, his diaper :P
  • He drools so much!  I think he's teething early.  Most babies drool a lot, but there are days where I have to change his outfit two or three times because of all the drool
  • His favorite person.......DAD
I don't have a picture yet, but I will be taking one tomorrow after I get batteries for the camera!

What a BIG day!

Michael surpassed a lot of my expectations today!  First off he held up his upper body with his arms!  According to books most almost 4 month old's can do this, but he has spent a lot less time on his tummy than most.  Josh said he was actually holding himself up one handed and sucking on his other hand :)

When I ran to grab the camera I came back and something didn't seem right.  It started out like this...
And ended like this...
Yup, my little guy rolled over!! This was actually a few minutes later when I got him to roll over a second time because I missed the first completely!

I'm so proud of my little guy!  He's shown a lot of promise for fine motor movement but I didn't think his gross motor movement would come out of nowhere.  And just for everyone's viewing pleasure, Michael also got his finger stuck in his nose, again, today.

All of this campaigning lately has made me decide I want to run, for mom of the year!  Here is a list of things I will do if elected:

  •  Provide new chairs in all of the mothers rooms!
  •  Include liposuction in the birth process
  •  Ban Lena Fokina from ever practicing baby yoga again!
  •  Provide bows to all little girls so they aren't called boys
So vote for me 2012!

A day in the life...the Michael edition.

Monday:
I wake up at 8 while daddy's eating breakfast and mommy's in bed.  I realize how hungry I am and start screaming my head off.  Mommy stumbles in and picks me up.  We sit down on the floor and she starts to feed me.  Daddy walks in with some yogurt complaining about how the only breakfast thing we have in the house besides yogurt is two gallons of milk, I smile because I have the best breakfast ever!  He reminds mommy he has a test today and leaves.  Mommy finally starts to wake up and won't shut up while I'm trying to eat.  Finally I feel like I've had enough and start fussing again.  Mommy then puts me sitting up in the boppy while she showers and eats.  She found eggs to eat, so while she was cooking those I watched Modern Family.  Mommy gave me my medicine, put me in my car seat, and off we go.

Usually I fall asleep in the middle of this great adventure, but mommy drives up to campus and picks up daddy.  They drive around to the other side of campus and drop off mommy, mommy complains about always being late to class.  Daddy drives back to the Engineering building and takes me inside.  We go up to the third floor where daddy studies with his friends while holding me in his lap.  Half hour later he loads me up in the dreaded car seat again to go get mommy.  I'm hungry again, and when I smell mommy get in the car I start screaming for food.  All I can think is this has to get their attention, but maybe I'll scream louder just in case!  Mommy takes her time to drop daddy off at the Engineering building again.  Daddy kisses me for good luck on his test.  Mommy drives home and feeds me again.

These "parents" of mine don't seem to understand that I hate the carseat.  Right when I finish eating mommy loads me back in again to go grocery shopping.  At least she talks to me and makes funny faces at me, even though people give her funny faces back.  We head home and I fall asleep.

At some point daddy came home before work to get changed, but I was too busy sleeping.  Until he closed the door and I realized I was hungry again!  Mommy took me upstairs and fed me, but I wasn't ready to be awake.  After a while she got it, and she rocked me to sleep.  It was a good nap except she fell asleep too.  Every once in a while she would move around and wake me up.  She startled me pretty bad.  I started crying out of frustration, and misinterpreting my signs, she tried to feed me.  After a few minutes of trying to eat I fell back asleep.  She put me down in bed but I got cold and woke up screaming.

I decided it was 5, and I could be awake.  Mommy played with me for a while.  She tried reading to me, but I got bored and started crying again.  She needs to learn how to make me happy.  Finally she decided to let me watch tv, but she played a horrible trick on me!  She kept putting me on my tummy.  I was so into New Girl and the Napoleon Dynamite cartoon that I wouldn't notice for a while.  When I did notice, she would pick me up, suction my nose :P, and hold me until I got distracted again.  After that she took me in her room and let me sit on her bed.  I found a tasty pillow to suck on, and left a present on daddy's side of the bed :).  I realized I was hungry again.  Mommy put me in jammies and started to feed me.  Slowly I fell asleep, thinking about how mommy forgot my nighttime medicine and vitamin today, and how daddy wouldn't get to see me tonight.  O well, I get to see him all day tomorrow!

This has been a day in the life of Michael.

I Pray He Doesn't Forget

Josh and I took an Institute class together about a year ago.  The teacher was absolutely amazing!  One day he told us a story from a girl he had a few years earlier.  She was giving her 2-year old niece and her 3 month old daughter a bath.  She had to grab a towel from a closet at the entrance to the bathroom.  She asked her niece to watch her baby.  When she walked back in she heard her niece say "will you tell me what Heaven was like, I'm starting to forget".

I just put Michael to bed.  It was a lengthy process tonight.  I gave him a bath, got him dressed, fed him, tried to rock him, read him stories, sang to him, and rocked him again.  Somewhere in the middle of it all I remembered this story.  Looking at my little boy all I could think was please don't forget.  I know he has to, but I pray he can keep a little memory, even just a glimmer of it, for as long as possible.  Because I know that he won't feel anything close to that joy for the next 19 years until he goes through the temple.  I also pray that I can be there on that day, and hold my boy as close as I did tonight.
